The Bronze National Navigation Award is a practical, hands-on 2-day qualification designed for individuals with little or no navigation experience. It’s ideal for those new to outdoor activities or those who have previously depended on others, guidebooks, or straightforward, well-marked routes.
This course will cover:
Use different types of maps and map scales for navigation.
Match significant landforms, such as large hills and valleys, to the contour patterns shown on the map.
Check travel direction using a correctly oriented map.
Calculate straight-line distances on a map and estimate real-world distances using timing, pacing, and basic visual assessments (e.g., estimating 100 meters).
Identify navigation mistakes promptly and correct them using visible features and linear landmarks for relocation.
Apply 4- and 6-figure grid references, along with written descriptions, to pinpoint map features and identify their location in the real world.
Follow linear features like paths, tracks, or clear boundaries as guides during basic navigation tasks.
Use easily recognized features to verify location en route and identify if the intended destination has been missed.
Understand that mobile phone GPS apps can serve as a backup navigation tool or be used in case of emergencies.
Display suitable knowledge of gear for walking, safety essentials, and what to do in an emergency.
Align the map using distinct landscape features, handrails, and major landforms.
Use a compass to align the map with grid north and understand that magnetic variation may introduce minor inaccuracies.
Devise and follow straightforward navigation routes and strategies using the above navigation skills.
Show understanding of public and private access rights, relevant laws, responsibilities, the Countryside Code, and sustainability principles.
